Hickory

Located in the most southern section of Chesapeake, Va. and along the North Carolina border, Hickory is the most rural section of the city.  Due to the hustle and bustle of other areas of Hampton Roads, many people are drawn to Hickory for the pursuit of peaceful living.  Hickory is not actually a formal neighborhood name but more of a label for an entire area with a very large land mass.  In fact, there are many smaller sub-neighborhoods in Hickory that we will eventually highlight here at HomesandFood.  Driving through Hickory you'll see homes on large lots, farmland, large mature trees, and a lot of open space.  It's really a great place to live if you prefer not to be right on top of your neighbors and enjoy a quieter life.  Traffic conditions, especially in the summer, used to be terrible with vacationers from all of the country driving down Battlefield Blvd on their way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Due to the demand, the city of Chesapeake agreed to build a bypass that allowed residents and visitors to not only use Battlefield Blvd. but also the new Route 168 which considerably eleviated the traffic jams of the past.  There is a toll on this road of $2 but frequent travalers can purchase an easy pass that will allow them to drive through the toll booth without stopping and only be charged .50 cents.  Until about 3 years ago, residents would have to drive into Great Bridge or Greenbrier to do their shopping.  Now, two large commercial developments have been built at the intersection of Hillcrest and Route 168.  On one side there is Home Depot, WaWa, and smaller retail stores.  On the other side there is a large Target store and about 2 dozen small stores.  Next door to the Target development is a huge area that is in the beginning stages of birth.  From what I hear, this will be a Walmart Superstore and no doubt dozens of restaurants and retail outlets.

At last check there were 73 homes for sale in Hickory, ranging in price from $192,000 to $1,200,000.  To the best of my knowledge there are no townhomes or condos in Hickory.  All that are for sale today are ranches and large 2 story homes of all ages.  As developers continue to purhase farmland to make new neighborhoods, there is a very good supply of homes that are new or fairly new.  Nearly have of the homes that are on the market now were built in 2000 or after.  As said before, Hickory is definitely an area of choice if you want to live on a large lot but the homes aren't small either.  35 of the 73 homes currently for sale are over 3000 square feet.

The schools for the area, which are some of the best in Hampton Roads, are Hickory Middle School and Hickory High School.
